I push weaving into new artistic space, both dimensionally and conceptually by marrying the two ancient art forms of origami and weaving together. My interdisciplinary approach to artmaking allows the work to address formal artistic concepts such as geometric composition, minimalism, low-relief [sculpture] and the contrast between positive and negative space. Often the dimensionality is revealed by shadow and texture. This work originates on the loom where discontinuous pleats are engineered, woven and incorporated into the ground cloth. The pleats act as the bridge between weaving and origami by being folded into perplexing, dimensional compositions without the use of cutting or sewing. I approach my work with complex thought but strive to execute it with simplicity by modifying my processes and equipment.
